Your Rights in "Card Not Present" Transactions
A credit-card transaction without your signature is called a "Card Not Present" transaction. It is used by mail-order and internet companies. Merchants prefer not to use these transactions if they can avoid it, because all the risk falls on them. If the customer queries a payment, it is reversed out of the merchant's account until the merchant can prove that a transaction took place.
Did you know that you have the right to query and/or reverse any card transaction that appears on your statement? For "Card Not Present" transactions it is up to the merchant to prove a valid transaction (which is quite difficult without a signed slip).
Have you ever bought anything in a store using your credit-card? This is much more risky for you than a "Card Not Present" transaction, because the vendor has your signature on a slip. A fraudulent vendor can swipe two slips and copy your signature. It is then up to you to prove that the extra transaction was fraudulent - i.e. you carry the risk.
Protection of your Card Details
Did you know that when you use Secure Sockets (when the little security lock appears in the bottom corner of the status bar), the data you are sending is only encrypted while it is in transit between your browser and the web server? When it arrives on the web server, it is automatically decrypted (and in some cases stored in a file in plain text for all the world to find).
Our server uses SSL when it comes to sending your personal and credit card information. Once on the server, the system encrypts your credit card information using a 512 bit strong key (4 times stronger than the FBI can decode in a reasonable amount of time).
The encrypted information is sent and stored on the server for only as long as it takes me to dial in to the web and download it to my PC. During this brief pause on the server your card details are perfectly safe because they are securely encrypted. When we need to read the information, we use our private key to extract the information. This is much safer than the security mechanisms used by banks and other shops for online transactions.
